7digital What we said: Adrian Thaws: the fiery Bristolian whose early work with 90s supergroup Massive Attack has since made him synonymous with trip-hop. While collaborative projects often result in revolutionary new stylistic directions, a distinct nostalgia pervades Skilled Mechanics; no doubt a result of contributions from his old pal from The Wild Bunch, Milo Johnson. Aside from the punchy electro of ‘Boy’, there’s an abundance of woozy melancholia, a la 1995’s ‘Overcome’, plus sultry turns from Oh Land and Francesca Belmonte. Even with a diverse set of contributors, there are no radical surprises here; instead, it’s a robust run-through of Thaws’ staple style.
